ANDALUCIA TOURISM NEWS JUNE 6 - JUNE 13 2001
MALAGA WINES
Andalucía boasts exquisite and prestigious varieties of wine made in several zones and villages of the region. The Muscatel wine, Sherry and Manzanilla are some of the most recognised Andalucian wines. Production is now to be increased with 800 new hectares of vines recognised by the European Union in Andalucian provinces such as Málaga, Granada, Cádiz and Almeria.
In Málaga they are planting new varieties of grape, which will give an impulse to the new official domination area for red and white quality wines ‘Sierras de Málaga’ - without forgetting the more traditional sweet smelling varieties. Ronda, Mollina, The Axarquía, The Western Coast and The Mountains are the areas where the vines are planted for the elaboration of the wines under the new denomination.
Málaga is traditionally a wine making province, where the majority of the hectares are given to vines dedicated to raisin production - a typical Málaga product.

BIRTHPLACE OF JUAN RAMON JIMENEZ
May 29 was the 43rd anniversary of the death of one of the most admired Andalucian poets - Juan Ramón Jiménez. It’s a good excuse to visit his house in Moguer, Huelva province, where he was born in 1881 and where we can recreate the time looking at manuscripts, letters and books in the same place as where they were written, and read and where he lived for so many years.
The gardens of the house remind us of Platero, the donkey which inspired his celebrated work ‘Platero and I’ and who was one of the most emblamatic and best known personalities in all his work. The house also preserves many photographic memories of his wife, Zenobia Camprubi, whom he married in 1916. Memories of Juan Ramón Jiménez, who received the Nobel prize for literature in 1956, two years before his death, remain alive in the house which saw his birth and where he wrote and loved. Finding out more about the work and life of this poet from Moguer is one of the best ways we can pay homage to Juan Ramón.

ECOLOGICAL CORRIDORS
A network of ecological corridors is to link the more than 100 protected natural spaces in Andalucía which represents nearly half of all the Andalucian municipalities. The objective of the project is to ensure that the residents of these villages situated in nature parks have a quality of life similar to residents of the city. The network of natural spaces in Andalucía also wants to ensure that visits to these parks are made with guides who can offer more information on the area. The area around Tarifa in Cádiz and the Nature reserve of the Isle of Alborán in Almería are examples of the latest areas to be declared as a Nature park.

FULL HOUSE AT THE OMMAYADS EXHIBITION
All the organisers expectations have been met - 2,500 visitors a day in groups of 250 an hour - in order to prevent any possible deterioration to the site under the visit of so many people. The highest number of visitors is at the weekend and therefore nearly all the entrance tickets for these days are sold for this month. However, many people still arrive without a ticket hoping to get in. Note too that every Monday, with the exception of the first Monday in the month, you can enter for free between 10am and 4pm. But you will need a previous application from the provincial delegation of culture of the junta. On other days the tickets are issued at a price of 600 pesetas in any El Corte Inglés store in Spain. The exhibition organisers also recommend the use of public transport. On the other hand cars can be parked nearby from where buses will take the visitors to site for free.

PROMOTUR
More than half the total income from tourism in Andalucía corresponds to residential tourism. That’s according to data from the 23 companies which have united to form the Andalucian Association of Residential and Sport Tourism Promoters, PROMOTUR. The defence of their common interest in sport and residential tourism is the objective of this newly formed association, stimulated by the growth this type of tourism has seen in Andalucía. A region where more than a million new residents are expected in forthcoming years. To the income from residential tourism you have to add those generated by the golf courses, sports marinas and activities such as horse racing. PROMOTUR, which counts with the Valderrama and La Quinta golf clubs among its founders, also intends to participate in the approval of new urban planning development in Andalucía.
