ANDALUCIA TOURISM NEWS 3 JULY - 10 JULY

ROYAL GLASS AND TABLEWARE
The glass and tableware together with ornamental objects which served the table of the Spanish monarchs and the elements used in the dining halls of the monasteries for 300 years, can be seen together in an exhibition held in the Málaga municipal museum.
The show, organised by the Caixa Foundation with funds from National Heritage allow us to see more than 300 original pieces, among them tapestries, paintings, and candelabras, only normally seen by the visitors to the royal palaces. Each one of the exhibitors or displays, illustrated by royal manuscripts and cooking books of the time, show in relief the custom of the main members if the court to eat alone.
This interesting exhibition continues until July 15 in the Málaga municipal museum.

ESPARRAGO 2001
More than 60 Spanish and foreign bands will take part in the 13th edition of the International Asparagus Rock festival 2001, which will be held in the Cádiz town of Jerez de la Frontera from July 13 - 15. Groups such as Neil Young or the Fabulous Cadillacs are some of the singers which we can see perform in this festival which ranges from rap and pop to rock and roll and flamenco. This year the Espárrago hosts the first pop rock competition which has been organised by the youth institute to promote the young creators of rock and roll in Andalucía. This festival was born in Huétor Tájar, a village of the Granada plain famous for its Asparagus growing and from there the meeting takes its name.

LOS MILLARES EXHIBITION
What was life like in a village of the copper age in Andalucía? Some of the answers can be found in the display ‘Los Millares - a millennium civilisation in Andalucía’ which takes place in the Huelva town of Cartaya until July 15. This exhibition shows the visitor the birth of Los Millares, situated in Santa Fe de Mondújar, in Almeria province, considered to be one of the most important of the copper age in Europe. To do this the show includes reconstructions, displays and reproductions of archaeological objects, which offer detailed information on aspects of this megalithic culture, whose inhabitants developed a pioneering agriculture from the use of metals.

CORDOBA GUITAR FESTIVAL
The city of Córdoba becomes a meeting place for singers and flamenco dancers from July 2 - 14th in the 20th Guitar Festival 2001. Of note are the shows from Amancio Prada, Pedro Guerra and the mixture that is Radio Tarifa, as well as the flamenco of Sara Baras, Estrella Morente or Manolo Sanlúcar who will offer a course on ‘Nature and form of the flamenco guitar’ In total, 29 concerts to be held on stages as marvellous as the Gran Teatro, the gardens of the Alcázar of the Catholic kings and the royal stables. In addition the Córdoba guitar festival also hosts performances in the open air, in the Corredera, Capuchinos and San Francisco squares. Along with the festival parallel activities take place such as a photographic exhibition in honour of the guitar and the presentation of the book ‘La Guitarra en la historia’

GOLF TOURISM FORUM
Thousands of golf fans play the sport each year in Andalucía - a region which boasts excellent facilities, mostly in the coastal areas of Cádiz, Huelva and Málaga. However, the demand is ever growing, which means it’s necessary to construct more golf courses with the aim of not just satisfying the demand but also of competing with other regions and European countries. The first golf tourism forum, organised in Torremolinos by the Costa del Sol tourist board, has decided to continue in the line of quality held up to now and try to attract more American tourists. A country with 25 million golfers with high spending power. Golf tourism last year generated income of more than 60,000 million pesetas in a sector which also gives jobs to more than 15,000 in Málaga province.

ALMERIA TOURIST BOARD
The tourist attractions of the Almeria coast have been on display since the start of the year in 10 European countries and North America, as well as on tour to 17 Spanish cities with the slogan ‘Almeria in your hands’ The object of the promotion is to fight the levelling off in the number of visitors seen in the low season last year. 60 per cent of the tourists are Spanish, 16 per cent German, 14 per cent British and Irish and 4 per cent Belgium. However, tourism has grown in the high season widening it to even include the month of October. The tourist board web page receives more and more hits from people wanting information on the province. In addition the promotion the Jazztel cycling team has made for the Almeria Coast is seen as very relevant.

SUMMER TOURISM PREDICTIONS
Tourism will generate an income in Andalucía this summer of 700,000 million pesetas, a record similar to recent years, according to the data from the tourism council. This summer it’s forecast that more than 6.5 million tourists will come to Andalucía - 3.5% more than last year. Occupation in hotels is expected to reach 75% in August and it will be the provinces of Málaga and Almeria which will see the highest occupancy. The majority of the tourists which come to Andalucía are attracted by the sun and beach, although later they take advantage of the cultural, sports and complementary offers at the places they visit.


AGENDA
The Málaga town of Estepona celebrates is main fair between Tuesday 3 and Sunday 8 of July.

The Andalucian Volley Ball club championships continue until July 22 in the provinces of Almería, Granada, Málaga, Cádiz and Huelva.

The exhibition ‘Manuel de Falla in Granada’ remains open until July 28 in the composer’s centre in Granada.

The la Caixa golf trophy is held in the Club Vista Hermosa in the Cádiz province town of EL Puerto de Santa María on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 of this month.

Between Friday 6 and Sunday 8 July the International record and film collectors fair takes place in Seville, where you can see the most expensive record in the world - The Beatles first record - Love me do.

The theatre and dance festival in Niebla, Huelva province starts Saturday July 7 with the performance of The Merchant of Venice by the Abadía theatre. The following Saturday, the 14th, the Andaluza dance company perform their Encuentros.

Until July 20 you can visit the show ‘Figures - Visions of contemporary art’ which is being held in the Puerta Real Cultural Centre in Granada. Picasso, Antonio López, Botero or Moore are some of the artists represented.

The Pemán theatre in Cádiz hosts the Cádiz International folklore festival between Tuesday 12 and Thursday 14 July.

The Isla Canela windsurfing regatta is held on Saturday 14 of this month in the Huelva locality of Ayamonte.

The castle in the Jaén province town of Canena holds the 10th edition of the Villa de Canena music festival.

The auditorium of the El Majuelo park in the Granada province town of Almuñecar hosts the Costa jazz festival.

The fiesta of the sardine is held on the port wall of the Punta Unbría fishermen’s association in the Huelva town on Sunday July 8.

Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July sees the prestigious Califas de Hierro Triathlon in the Córdoba town of Posadas.

Alejandro Sanz arrives in Málaga with his El Alma al Aire tour on Tuesday July 10

270 horses from the most important stables of Andlaucía and Spain have a date between Wednesday 11 and Sunday 15 of this month of July in the San Pedro de Alcántara sports centre in Málaga, for the Pure Spanish Breed Andalucian Horse Championships.

Monday July 9 sees a performance of the American singer Vonda Shepard in the Cervantes Theatre in Málaga.
