ANDALUCÍA TOURISM NEWS - OCTOBER 4 2001

MONTEFRIO THEME CENTRE
‘What did the last Spanish Muslims of Al-Andalus eat at the end of the 15th century?’
‘How did they dress, what did they play at, what were their professions?’
The answer to these questions is in El Centinela - a theme centre on the concept of the frontier area which reconstructs the history of Western Granada at the end of the Nazarene time. Set up in the church which Diego de Siloé built in Montefrio, the centre offers two attractions - as well as explaining life in the area, also allows us to visit one of the most interesting renaissance places of worship in the province.
Modern audiovisual techniques add content to the centre which aspires to become part of the tourist development in the west. 192,000 i, 32 million pesetas, have been invested in what is the second European Lider program in the creation of the centre. El Centinela not only creates Nazarene life, but also looks towards the new frontiers of the 21st century to which it dedicates one of its rooms.

CÓRDOBA CITIES OF THE SOUTH SECRETARIAT
The 174 cities which have been declared Heritage of Mankind by Unesco, created the World Heritage Organisation in 1993, to which some 97 cities have joined so far. This organisation is distributed in several regional secretariats. The Northen Europe is in Norway, Eastern Europe in Hungary, The Americas in Mexico, Northern Arab cities in Turkey - and now the fifth group Southern Europe in Córdoba. By working together the cultural, tourist, economic and patrimonial potential of all the cities in the secretariat can be developed.

MANUEL ALTOLAGUIRRE EXHIBITION
‘Manuel Altolaguirre and Concha Méndez, poets and printers’ - That’s the title of the exhibition which collects a selection of the more than 15,000 documents which make up the couple’s archive.
After the death of the poet in 1959, Concha Méndez collected up all the documents from the 12 years of their life together. The cuttings which they took to exile in 1936, photographs and portraits of both of them and other poets from the generation of 27, as well as letters and the books most appreciated by them.
Manuel Altolaguirre and his wife worked hard as poets but also as printers for the main part of the grand writers of the generation of 27.
In the exhibition, which remains open until October 19 in the Generation 27 Cultural Centre in Málaga, we can also see the machines of the old Imprenta Sur printing company.

JAÉN FERIA
The San Lucas Feria in Jaén is the last of the fiestas to be held in the Spanish provincial capitals. This party also closes the bullfighting year in Andalucía, a closure starring some of the most famous of the current matadors. Residents and visitors to Jaén can also enjoy musical performances and other competitions, among them the National Show Jumping Championship. This has seen, since 1942, the participation of a large number of well known jockeys and his held in the La Alameda Horse riding club.
From October 14-21 a total of 102 casetas or marquees will be set up in the La Vestida feria ground, and unite thousands of people eager to enjoy a few days of fun.

JAEN INLAND FERIA
There is little time to go before this fair is held on the normal feria site. The idea is that it be something more than just leaflets. It has a budget of 125 million pesetas of which the regional government, the Junta has given 85 and Ferias Jaen the rest. It’s held between the 25th and 28th of October with the intention of being the starting point of other fairs across the country. 90% of the stalls in ‘Tierra Adentro’ have already been taken. The fair will be interactive, the idea being that visitors can take part in activities which take place in countryside, or perceive sensations and see monuments without actually being there. In addition during the fair the newspaper ‘Andalucía Rural’ will be presented - a publication which collects all the cultural activities and festivals held in any part of the Andalucian geography.

CÁDIZ LITHOGRAPH MUSEUM
This is one of the industrial flat presses which you can visit in the Lithograph museum workshop. It dates from the last century and, despite its age, remains in working order. The instruments and industrial machines in the museum come from the German lithograph company Nicholas Müller, which was established at the end of the 19th century in Cádiz. More than 1000 engraved limestone plates, the most important collection in Europe, lithograph and printing machines, stamp makers and other items for stamping can all be seen in the museum. In the future, the installation of a permanent exhibition on industrial archaeology is planned which will be housed in the vaults of Puerta Tierra and which will host this museum, a school workshop, a tobacco museum and the old municipal laboratory. The work carried out was done by real craftsmen. First an inked roller was passed over a polished limestone plate and afterwards came the printing. The result - a perfectly stamped lamina.

ANTONIO BANDERAS AND MELANIE GRIFFITH PROMOTE ANDALUCÍA
With this picture over the Internet, Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith accepted the nomination for them to promote Andalucía. They have promised to carry out an Andalucian Cultural Week at Pennsylvania University and hold a grand fiesta in their house for politicians and artists from Hollywood.
The objective is that more North American tourists come to Andalucía to spend their holidays. Nearly 7 million tourists have visited the area this summer - 12% more than last year. They have spent 540,000 million pesetas, more than 3,000 million Euros. Málaga is the province which has welcomed most tourists - and where most stayed for longer.

FOOLISH TURTLES IN ALMERIA
This is the moment when, in a video from the local police in Vera, the young abandoned turtles are collected from the beach and helped towards the sea.
It’s the first time that such a turtle birth has been seen on the Spanish Mediterranean. It happened on July 26th. Two workers on the Vera nudist beach were witness to the event. The news was passed on to the Nature protection unit of the civil guard. Since then, environmental volunteers, coordinated by the regional environment office, have guarded the site and kept watch. Now the scientists will study all the documentation which has been generated by this environmental event with the hope that more eggs will be laid from this species in danger of extinction in forthcoming years.

VOLVO MASTERS JEREZ
The Montecastillo golf course, in the Cádiz province town of Jerez de la Frontera, will, for another year, again be the scene of the Volvo Masters - a golf championship which traditionally closes the season on the European golf circuit. The championship, which has been played in Andalucía since being established 13 years ago, will continue to be held in the region until at least 2004, following the renovation of the agreement between the Tourism Council and the sponsor of the event, which will now be known as the Volvo Masters Andalucía. The tournament will be held between the 8th and 11th of November and was attended last year by more than 12,000 people - a number which this year could increase to more than 20,000. 66 players will take part in the Volvo Masters, 55 of the best from the European rankings, 5 previous winners and six by invitation. Golf is a source of income for Andalucía which last year was close to 100,000 million pesetas.
