Ovidian Photographic Exhibition
Until 28th August, Ovidian photographic exhibition at the Roman Theatre Museum in Cartagena
This year marks the 2000th anniversary of the death of the Roman poet Ovid
An exhibition is on display until late August at the Museo del Teatro Romano in Cartagena containing photographic images created by Joaquín Bérchez based on the life and exile of Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso, better known simply as Ovid.
Entitled “Photographica Ovidiana”, the exhibition attempts to recreate through fictional photography the actual events and circumstances surrounding Ovid’s exile. At the same time the importance of the poet is reflected by the images of cities related to his life and locations where monuments have been erected in his honour.
Ovid was born in Sulmona in 43 BC and died in 17 AD in Tomis (now Constanta in Rumania), where he had been exiled nine years earlier, a fact which heavily influenced his work during the last decade of his life. It is towards the wheat fields and sunflowers of the region of Dobruja, the port of Ponto Euxino on the Black Sea and the delta of the Danube that photographer Joaquín Bérchez points his lens, as well as focusing on the friezes and memorial stones of Histria and the Roman mosaics of Constanta.
Added to these aspects of Ovid’s exile is the distant memory of Sulmona, where a statue in honour of the poet has stood since 1474, while another memorial stands in the Piazza XX Settembre in Constanta.
Joaquín Bérchez’s images, which were taken between 2011 and 2015, are on display in Cartagena to coincide with the 2,000th anniversary of Ovid’s death. Alongside it a video, also entitled Photographica Ovidiana and created by Joaquín Bérchez y Juan Peiró, is being shown.
The Museo del Teatro Romano is the most visited museum in the Region of Murcia, and this is the latest in a wide range of exhibitions and displays which continue to attract both visitors and local residents. Opening hours during which Photographica Ovidiana can be seen are from Tuesday to Saturday between 10.00 and 20.00 and on Sundays from 10.00 to 14.00.
Joaquín Bérchez is a photographer and architectural historian who was Professor of History of Art at the University of Valencia from 1992 to 2010. His work has been exhibited at a wide range of international venues including New York, Vicenza, Palermo, Rome, Lisbon and Athens.
The exhibition can be seen until the 28th August 2017.
