It follows ETA's sending of a statement to the European Media
The European Commission has today warned the Basque Terrorist Group ETA that it has to deal with the Spanish authorities and no one else. The comment comes after ETA sent a statement to several embassies and communications media across Europe, calling on the European Institutions to put pressure on the Spanish and French governments to start a supposed peace process.
However, Spanish media have been quick to point out that nowhere in the statement does ETA make any reference to a cease fire.
It’s the tenth statement from the terrorist group this year.
The Spanish government has commented that the only statement from ETA that they will be interested in, is one in which the terrorists announce an end to violence.
Partido Popular sources in Europe, say that members of ETA’s banned political wing ‘Batasuna’ have been in contact following the statement with nationalist and Sinn Fein Euro MPs to promote what they call the start of dialogue in the Basque conflict.
Miren Azkarote, Spokesperson for the Basque government, made this comment,
‘It will always be better for ETA to express their opinion through a statement rather than through extorsion or bombs. It gives us hope that the terrorist organisation wants to follow a route that will lead us to peace, but it must renounce all type of violence’
