Spaniards see terrorism as a top concern for the third month running

Terrorism is still a major concern for Spaniards, and takes first place in the latest monthly survey by the CIS Sociological Investigation Centre for the third month running.
Their figures for March show that 38.2% of those asked see terrorism as the main problem affecting the country. It has, however, dropped on results for February, when 42.5% saw it as the greatest concern. The February survey was taken amidst the controversy surrounding the reduced prison grade granted to ETA hunger, José Ignacio de Juana Chaos.
Unemployment remains in second place, although it has reduced somewhat as a major concern, as has immigration.
Housing, in fourth place, has seen a marginal increase of 0.6.
The most marked difference is in politics, where the spectrum covering political class and parties has jumped from seventh to fifth place. 16% said it was their greatest concern in March.
Almost half of those asked said they could see no change to the political spectrum in the next year.
El Pais newspaper meanwhile reported on Monday that the prosecution service and the state legal service are both preparing to challenge at least 30% of candidates presented on the electoral lists for the Basque party, ANV – Acción Nacionalista Vasca, one of the founding parties of Batasuna, which is considered to be the political wing of the ETA terrorist organisation. The challenge would take place under the terms of the Law on Political Parties.
This comes despite the decision reported at the weekend that National Court Judge, Baltasar Garzón, has found no criminal grounds in police reports on ANV to declare them illegal as a party.
