Spain has the highest divorce rate in Europe

There were 141,817 divorces last year: 3.16 for every one thousand inhabitants

Spain has the highest divorce level in the European Union, according to new figures released this week.

Figures from the IPF, the Family Policies Institute, and quoted by El Mundo newspaper, show that figures for 2006 increased by 51% on 2005, with 141,817 divorces.

It equates to 3.16 divorces per one thousand inhabitants.
The highest divorce rate, per region, is in the Canary Islands, closely followed by the Balearic Islands, and then Cataluña.

Castilla-La Mancha has however seen the largest increase, with the divorce rate almost tripling since 2004.

Extremadrua fares the best, where only 2.06 people got divorced per one thousand inhabitants.

The divorce rate in Spain has grown by 277% in the past five years, increasing to 2006 levels from 93,536 in 2005 when the new express divorce law was passed.
