email this article Before leaving for his summer holidays, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero thanked the French security forces for their recent successes against ETAThe Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, gave a press conference on Friday in which he summarised the first six months of this year’s legislature.
Zapatero used the appearance before the press to thank the French security forces for their recent successes against the Basque terrorist group ETA, and warned that despite the evident recent success the public should not drop their guard.
He also congratulated the Spanish and Portuguese for their work in the arrest of ‘El Solitario, The Loner’ Spain’s most wanted last week, whom he referred to as one of the most dangerous delinquents in Spain.
The Prime Minister also had works for the people of Barcelona who had suffered a three day power cut earlier in the week, saying that he understood their indignation. He promised to act against those found to be responsible. He said that Barcelona did not deserve to see another similar occurance.
Zapatero also welcomed the new employment figures released showing that a record number of people were now employed in Spain, over 20 million, with the unemployment rate now down to 8%.
He also confirmed that the cabinet had named the previous Socialist Prime Minister, Felipe González, as the extraordinary Spanish Ambassador for the 200 year independence celebrations which are to take place in Latin America.
