The 44 year old man was in his garage when the flood water caused a retaining wall to collapse
The severe weather which affected Andalucía on Friday, with large hailstones affecting the Marbella and Coín area in particular, also caused considerable damage in the area of Nerja and Almuñecar.
The body of a 44 year old man German man has been found by divers in Almuñecar, after he was surprised by the flood when in his garage. He has been named with the initials S.B. Reports say he had driven his car out of the garage, but went back inside to get his moped which was underwater inside. It was at that time that a nearby retaining wall next to a river gave way, and a wave of water stuck the garage. Members of his family saw how be went back into the garage, but did not come out.
Firemen were called out 82 times in the town as the downpour hit.
In nearby La Herradura the retaining wall for the Jate river gave way under the pressure of water.
In Nerja 200 litres per square metre fell, car parks were flooded, and there is concern for the state of part of a coastal walkway and also for the older bridge which gives access to the town.
Nerja and nearby villages, some 40,000 people, were without power for some seven hours during the afternoon.
In Almería the city’s football stadium looked more like a swimming pool with water reported to be knee-deep over the pitch.
Back in the west of the region, the rain is reported to have ruined 15% of the grape harvest in the Jerez region.
