European Commission studies the legality of Torremolinos rubbish tip

The controversy over the Torremolinos rubbish tip has now reached the European Commission, with the news from the Junta de Andalucía’s environment chief for Málaga province, Ignacio Trillo, that the EC has started an informative enquiry into the tip and its legality under European law. The enquiry comes after an EC request for a report from Spain on all tips which do not comply with European legislation.
Trillo told La Opinión de Málaga that any fine which may be incurred on Spain would most likely be taken out of the budget allocated to Torremolinos.
He told the paper that the Junta has never considered the tip to be legal and has been asking the Town Hall to close it since 1991. The Town Hall has placed a court appeal against the Junta’s order to close it down.
