A Galician fishing boat on Thursday rescued 48 immigrants trying to reach the Canary Islands, but found two dead among the travellers.

The rescue operation took place 370 miles to the SE of the island of El Hierro and was carried out by the ‘Pinillos Primero’ a fishing boat based in Pontevedra. The boat is expected to transfer the immigrants to the Coastguard vessel ‘Luz del Mar’ later today.

The Cayuco boat carrying the immigrants was first spotted by a yacht which was taking part in a regatta and had left Las Palmas, destination Santa Lucía.
