email this article The blaze which destroyed 600 hectares was started by a spark from a hire car engineThe Junta de Andalucía is to receive 2.5 million € compensation for a forest fire in the Sierra de Mijas in 2001 to cover the cost of the fire fighting effort, as well as the reforestation of 590 hectares of public land. The money will be paid by the company, Volksfürge, the insurers of the rental car which started the fire, and is said by 20 minutos to be the first agreement of its type.
The fire started late on 28th July 2001 when the car broke down on the road to Coín. A spark from the smoking engine started the first flames, which rapidly spread in winds of more than 40 kph, and caused 300 people to be evacuated from their homes.
The blaze destroyed 600 hectares before it was finally extinguished several days later.
