A consumers association has placed formal complaints against the hottest calendar of 2008 as an affront to the dignity of women

The consumers association, FACUA, has registered formal complaints against Ryanair’s new charity calendar, which the low-cost airline describes as the hottest calendar of 2008. It’s on sale on Ryanair flights and also over the Internet, and shows the company’s cabin crew in skimpy bikinis in poses which FACUA says are an ‘affront to the dignity of working women in general and, in particular, to cabin crew, by showing stereotypical images which the women in that profession have been fighting against for years.’

FACUA has placed complaints to the Employment Ministry’s Institute for Women and to the National Consumers Institute.

The Institute for Women, who describe the calendar as a sexist representation of women, responded in a press release on Tuesday that they will write to the authorities in Ireland on the matter via the Irish Embassy in Spain. They said they will take the case to the next meeting of the European Union’s High Level Group on Gender Equality, and will consult their legal department on what action can be taken.
