David Fernández is protesting the situation of supply teachers and has not eaten for almost a month

The Vélez Málaga supply teacher who started a hunger strike just under a month ago was rushed to the emergency department at the Axarquía district hospital in Vélez on Sunday. David Fernández began his protest against regional education regulations which prevent him applying for jobs as a primary school teacher, as it is not his speciality.
He specialises in music and physical education.

He argues that he should be allowed to do apply on the grounds of length of service, and says he has more than one school year’s experience in primary education.

His mother told EFE her son had a fever and pains in his chest, and is now under observation while doctors await the results of analyses. He is also being administered a saline solution through an intravenous drip.

Fernández was at a council meeting in Vélez Málaga Town Hall on Thursday which unanimously approved a motion of support for teachers in his situation.
