Part of the upper level fell in over the kitchen just as they were finishing dinner

A couple in their eighties escaped uninjured on Sunday evening when part of their house in the village of Abarán suddenly collapsed. It happened in the village centre in a two-level cave house which is said to be some 100 years old. The house has been sealed off by police.

It appears that a part of the upper level which lies above the kitchen fell in just as the wife had got up from her seat at the dinner table to take the plates into the kitchen. Police say she thought it was an earthquake.

Reports indicate there was also damage to a neighbouring uninhabited property, which is also a cave house.
