The panel which elected Nauzet Celeste Cruz included Sophia Loren and Gerard Depardieu

More than 9,000 people were at the gala in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Wednesday night, where a panel of judges which included Sophia Loren and Gerard Depardieu chose this year’s Carnival Queen from amongst 17 candidates.

The theme this year was magic, and the costumes were indeed magical, elaborate constructions weighing up to 200 kilos, with names reflecting the theme, from ‘The Fountain of Life,’ to ‘The Persian Empire.’ The crown went to 22 year old Nauzet Celeste Cruz Melo from Arona, for ‘The Golden Age,’ a costume designed by Santi Castro.

Elizabeth García, decked in the costume ‘Miss Dior,’ was also crowned last night by the Mayor of Santa Cruz, Miguel Zerolo. Her ceremony took place a year late, following the controversy at the Gala organised by the famous choreographer, Rafael Amargo, which prevented her receiving her crown as the Carnival Queen of 2007.

Amargo’s production last year was met with boos from the crowd and hundreds of complaints, and a comment from a local councillor that it ‘did not reflect carnival.’
