1900: Pablo Picasso’s first solo exhibition opens in the Barcelona tavern, Els Quatre Gats.
1982: the autonomous communities of Cantabria and Asturias, previously the provinces of Santander and Oviedo, are officially created when their first regional statutes come into force.
The writer and economist, José Luis Sampedro, was born in Barcelona in 1917, and the Catalan screenwriter and film director, Francesc Bellmunt, in Sabadell in 1947.
The Catalan swimmer, David Meca, was born in Sabadell 47 years later, in 1974.
