email this articleThe Daily Telegraph says that four British couples are set to lose their homes because of the construction of a new high speed train lineThe Daily Telegraph in Britain has revealed that another British couple face the demolition of their retirement home in Almería.
Richard and Wendy Kaleta say they were given permission to build their home in Turre, despite the fact that four months earlier a proposal was published to use the land for a new AVE high speed rail link. They tell the paper that they, and another three British couples, face losing their homes and that they will only be paid compensation for the land concerned, and not reimbursed for the house they have built on it. Their four bedroom detached villa, built on two and a half acres, was completed in January 2003.
The AVE link proposal was published in December 2001, four months before the Kaleta’s were given permission to build, and the couple think the local Town Hall must have known of the proposed railway which will run between Murcia and Almería.
They say that they were not advised about the railway until a Spanish friend gave them the news and showed them a local newspaper. Now the couple fear that construction could start as early as next year.
The Telegraph reports that they purchased the land from a local estate agent, Arturo Grima, who is also a former Partido Popular Mayor of the town. He claims he did not know about the railway plans which now foresee the demolition of the four properties.
