The Información newspaper said the bones were found below ground at the crossroads of Calles Pintor Lozano and Los Ángeles, and could belong to several people.
Amongst them was a skull, which by its size, could either be that of a woman or a child. The paper said the bones could have been there for more than 50 years.
There are a number of theories being put forward as to how the bones came to be there: from a nearby former convent which was equipped with a hospice and a sanatorium, that there may have been a cemetery in the area for those who died outside the walls of Benidorm castle, or that the workmen may have discovered a mass grave from the Civil War.
