The two main party leaders attacked each other at rallies last night
With the General Election campaign in Spain starting officially tomorrow, the Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has launched a personal attack on the leader of the Partido Popular, Mariano Rajoy.
Zapatero asked a rally in Gijón last night, If Rajoy has not been firm with Aguirre, how is he going to be firm when running the country?’. The reference is to Esperanza Aguirre, the PP President of the Madrid region, whose long-running campaign against the PP Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón is considered by many as the reason why Gallardón was not allowed his wish to be included on the PP list for candidates for Congress in the election.
Zapatero said that his Government had done what it had to do, ‘such as telling the President of the United States – ‘there you are left with your troops, we are leaving your illegal war’. That, Zapatero said was being firm.
Meanwhile the PP leader Mariano Rajoy has been attacking Zapatero. Speaking in Mallorca, Rajoy said that Zapatero had tricked the public in the most important subjects, before, during and after the ETA cease fire. He had repeatedly lied to the Spanish people, said Rajoy.
IU have meanwhile been obliged to withdraw a video on the internet page for the party leader Gaspar Llamazares which showed his avatar in Second Life setting fire to photos of the Royal Family. Llamazares said that the video had been ‘inadequate’ but he considered the scandal which had resulted from it as being 'hypocritical'. The party management said that the video now belongs to ‘the You Tube universe’.
