email this article The new 'Policia de Barrio' have started pounding the beat in some areas of the cityNew local ‘bobbies on the beat’ have started their patrols in Elche. The new Policía de Barrio started work in four districts of the city, Carrús, Pla, Altabix and in the central Rabal areas, and also in four surrounding areas, Torrellano, El Altet, La Hoya and La Marina.
The foot patrols will take place Monday to Friday with the City Hall saying they want the new policemen to be their ‘eyes, ears and mouthpiece’. Councillor of Citizen Safety, Emilio Martínez, said a total of 48 policemen and women would be taking part in the new service in the city, and 42 more in the surrounding areas.
Mayor of Elche, Alejandro Soler, said that the new local police was one of his previous manifesto promises, and those going on the beat had volunteered from the local police to take part in the new service.
