email this article A Spanish artist has shown the clearing up on the morning after The Last Supper in a work based on the famous painting by Leonardo da VinciThe Escualas Pías Church in Gandía, Valencia, is currently displaying a large painting from the local painter, Joan Costa, which praises the work of the cleaning lady. The work was a commission from the Padres Escolapios in Gandia, and is based on ‘The Last Supper’ by Leonado da Vinci.
The 4.8m by 2.2 m work hangs in one of the internal chapels.
Called ‘Religious Cleaning, The Day After’ the paper shows a group of cleaning women clearing up after The Last Supper celebrated by Jesus and his disciples.
The painter describes the work as ‘a modest act of justice for the women who clear up dirt to earn a living’. He has also included three women seated at the table, to represent the future role of women clergy in the church.
