The Ley de Costas, Coastal Law is being extended in these areas to stop coastal construction

The Ley de Costas, Coastal Law, is 20 years old this summer, and for the first time it is to be extended to better protect the Cádiz province coastline. The possibility has always existed to extend the protection measures, but this is the first time that such a consensus has been reached between the Ministry for the Environment, the regional government Junta de Andalucía and the local councils concerned.

The law says there should be no building in 100m from the high-water line, and this is now going to be increased to 200m in 24 special protection areas along the Costa de la Luz. These are areas, totalling 187kms are considered to be of outstanding beauty or environmental value. 16 different municipalities are affected by the changes.

They are Barbate, Conil, El Puerto, Rota, Tarfia, Puerto Real, Trebujena, Sanlúcar, San Roque, La Línea, Vejer, Chipiona, Los Barrios, Chiclana and Algeciras.
The process to protect nine of these areas is already undeway and will completed within three years – these are:
The Breña cliffs (Barbate), Cabo Gracia, Punta Camarinal and El Lentiscal, and Valdevaqueros and Los Lances (Tarifa); The public hill in the dunes at Rota, the dunes of San Antón and el coto de la Isleta (El Puerto), The left bank of the San Pedro river (Puerto Real), the area of the Roche river and the coastline of Roche (Conil).

The Ministry for the Environment has also announced it will reward those projects which care for the coastline, such as the improvement of coastal walkways or the construction of new paseo marítimos.
