Zapatero has convinced his friend Alonso to be the Socialist group spokesman, is the headline in El Mundo. The paper says he will have to deal with the task of renovating the General Council for Judicial Power and the Constitutional Court. El Mundo notes that Ibarra has complained that Alonso is not a card-carrying member of the party. El Mundo considers the old maxim – You never say no to a friend. ABC notes that lack of card for Alonso also.
El País says that Zapatero has given Alonso the job of agreeing with the PP on the reform of the judiciary.
ABC considers that Pedro Solbes has agreed with the Prime Minister to limit the power of the economic office in the Moncloa. The paper says Solbes has only agreed to stay on if the change takes place.
Público has a large front page photo of Alonso, and calls him the President’s man. It says that Zapatero used his friendship to convince Alonso to accept the post of parliamentary spokesman.
La Vanguardia claims that Zapatero has offered Chacón a top ministerial post.
El Mundo notes that the General Council for Judicial Power is not going to punish the judges, including Madrid train bombing judge Bermúdez, who signed an anti-PP manifesto during the election campaign.
In international stories,
El País has a front page photo of human rights protestors interrupting the ceremony for the lighting of the Olympic torch in Olympia yesterday.
El Mundo notes that 4,000 United States soldiers have now lost their lives in Iraq in five years of war. The paper notes that Cheney has admitted that the number could have a ‘psychological impact’ on the population of the USA.
ABC also highlights the number, and notes that 97% of the deaths have taken place in the post-war.
El País notes that there is a new campaign to get all swearing off the television in the United States.
Back in Spain,
El Mundo continues its interview with the widow of the Madrid train bomber known as El Chino. Today the paper headlines the quote from her ‘A member of the prosecution told me how to declare in the train bombings court case. The paper claims she has told them why she did not say the truth to the chamber.
El País notes that hundreds of religious education teacher are upset at the Spanish bishops. Apparently the bishops are not recognising how long the teachers have been working and increasing their wages accordingly.
El Mundo notes that the number of the deaths on Spanish roads this past Easter holiday has fallen to below 100 for the first time.
El Periódico de Cataluña notes, with a front page photo, that Easter ended with the largest snowfall of the year in the Pyrenees.
El País warns that the slow down in the Spanish economy will be greater in 2009. The paper says the experts are also expecting to see an increase in unemployment.
El Mundo reports that the CNI, the Spanish secret service, considers that Basque Terrorists ETA have no intention of trying to negotiate again with the Government for at least 18 months. The paper notes that Interior minister Rubalcaba has warned that he are entering a long cycle of ETA violence.
El País notes that pregnant women often suffer ‘mobbing’ in the workplace which can end in a sacking. The paper notes that it is very difficult for a pregnant woman to find employment and the prejudice is separate from any class distinctions.
Público notes that the single mother is ever more common in Spanish society today.
ABC notes that the Government has taken three years to start work on a desalination plant for Barcelona, considered urgent in 2004. The paper says building work has just started.
El País celebrates Spanish success in the European swimming championships, with 12 medals and 22 new records.
And finally,
El Mundo reports that a lorry driver has been jailed in Afghanistan for taking two cargos of alcoholic drinks to Spanish troops stationed there.
