Spain is suffering the worst period of Mediterranean drought since 1912. Only the rivers in the north of the country are flowing. The general director for water from the Ministry of the Environment, Jaime Palop, has given the date and said that the Central Commission for water transfers will be calling on the cabinet to move a total of 39 cubic hectometers over the next three months.
Palop said all this water would go for human consumption, 36 cubic hectometers of it for the Canales del Taibilla and the remaining three for municipalities in Almería.
The Tajo valley is guaranteed for supplies but there are problems in Gerona and Barcelona. In the Segura valley human consumption is covered but there are restrictions for Agriculture, with similar restrictions also in place in the Guadalquivir.
Meanwhile the director general of rural agriculture in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Francisco Amarillo, has said that a large effort is being made to modernise water distribution networks along the Levante, in order to save water. But despite that, he said the situation was worrying, and the priorities, in line with those marked out by law, were those being carried out.
