email this article The Mari Luz case and some amazing revelations leads most of the Spanish papers today.El Mundo headlines that a judicial error meant that the killer of Mari Luz was free. The paper says that Santiago del Valle had two firm prison sentences pending adding up to four years and nine months for committing sexual crimes.
El Mundo says that the Court in Sevilla took three years to ratify the sentence which found him guilty of abusing his own daughter when she was five years old.
The paper says that Council for Judicial Power is to investigate Judge Rafael Tirado Márquez for not issuing an arrest order until yesterday.
El Mundo has a large front page photo of neighbours and members of the Mari Luz family clashing with police outside the court in Huelva as Santiago del Valle arrived.
El País also has a front page photo of the scuffles outside the Huelva court and again notes that a judicial error had left the alleged killer on the streets.
Público has a large front page photo of Mari Luz with the headline ‘It could have been avoided’. The paper says that a chain of negligence meant that the accused was free to kill Mari Luz, despite being found guilty twice for child sexual abuse.
ABC notes that a judicial investigation has been opened into the matter.
The fall out from the General Election continues as does the speculation about the new cabinet.
El Mundo notes that María Teresa Fernández de la Vega will have a greater weight in the new Government, and José Enrique Serrano will be the Minister for the Presidency.
El País headlines that Zapatero will be forming a new cabinet with the plan of renewing it again in two years time. The paper says the new legislature will be split into two because of the Spanish presidency of the European Union.
El País claims that many top members of the Partido Popular are getting nervous, the reason being the continued silence from the leader Mariano Rajoy about his plans.
In International stories:
El Mundo notes that Sarkozy and Brown have signed an agreement to stimulate nuclear power. The paper also notes that the Prime Minister broke protocol to give Carla Bruni two kisses as he welcomed her to Downing Street.
ABC has a front page photo of the kiss, Gordon Brown with pursed lips. The caption reads ‘La Entente Formidable’
El Mundo says the rebellion by Al Sadr Shiite radicals has now reached the oil wells in the south of the country, and has left hundreds of dead.
El País thinks the radical Shiites are trying to overturn the Iraqui government.
El Mundo reports that in Colombia the FARC guerrillas has to take their hostage, Ingrid Betancourt, to a rural health centre in February because she was very ill.
And an amazing story in El Mundo today, tells of a man from Texas who has been found guilty of putting his daughter in a microwave oven for 20 seconds.
Back in Spain,
El Mundo notes that Esperanza Aguirre and Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón are at loggerheads in Madrid again, over the plans to reform the area of the Prado in the city centre.
El País notes that real estate promoters in Madrid are forecasting an 8% fall in prices this year. The paper says it’s the first time that they have forecast a price fall.
The end of a financial scandal in Spain has seen the owner of the Gescartera company, Antonio Camacho and seven others to a total of 52 years in jail. El Mundo notes that the sentence has not made it clear where the missing 88 million € defrauded from the clients are right now.
El País highlights that Caja Madrid and La Caixa have also been found guilty in the scandal, and will have to compensate the investors who lost their money.
And finally,
ABC headlines the ironic situation of the drought. Barcelona has started to face fines for those who water plants, and it comes as heavy rains inland have led to the Ebro river flooding in places, including the works to build the Expo universal exhibition in Zaragoza. The paper says Barcelona is keeping to its plans to bring in water to the city by boats from Marseille, Tarragona and Almería.
