Environmental changes have led to a sharp fall in the numbers of the cats which are now an endangered species
The World Wildlife Fund/Adena has called for a new emergency plan to be introduced to protect the Iberian lynx.
It comes after one of the cats, ‘Clavo’, was found dead on Wednesday in the Doñana Nature Park in Huelva this week after being hit by a car. It was the second death so far this year, and the ecologists say that urgent measures are now needed.
The request comes despite the recent birth of several kittens in the Coto del Rey area, with Adena saying the population in the Doñana park is in an ‘extremely serious’ situation with a total population estimated to be 45.
