More immigrant arrivals on the Canaries

A Cayuco boat with 56 immigrants on board, 16 of them thought to be children, arrived on the Playa Santiago on the island of La Gomera yesterday, according to a Canary Government spokesman. They reached shore just after 6,30pm and all except one were in a good state of health. One person has been taken to a health centre for tests. They have now been taken to the immigrant reception centre at Camello where they will held for 72 hours ahead of repatriation.
An earlier boat with 27 on board arrived yesterday morning in Órzola in the north of Lanzarote. There were three children and a woman in that group.
Over the first quarter of this year, the Canary Islands have seen 277 more immigrant arrivals than for the same period last year even though the number of boats has been fewer.
1,020 immigrants arrived in total over the first three months of this year on Tenerife, 501 on Gran Canaria, 119 on El Hierro and 62 on Lanzarote.
