A Socialist councillor from the village of Castro del Rio is among those arrested.

Luis Castro, a Socialist councillor from the Córdoba village of Castro del Rio, has resigned after being among nine people arrested in connection with a network which pillaged local archaeological remains.

Police say that more than 20 people were involved in the gang across Spain which communicated by phone and over the Internet. The items stolen were sold in online auctions.

The police operation remains open and more arrests have not been ruled out. Police are yet to establish the full extent of the activities of the gang, where the items were taken from, and what the possible value of such items might prove to be.

Earlier this week a tenth century capital from Medina Azahara in Córdoba made 1.9 million € at a sale in Christie’s in London.
