1899: a peace treaty came into force between Spain and the United States, by which Spain ceded the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico to the US.

1983: José Luis Garci’s ‘Volver a empezar’ becomes the first Spanish language film to win an Oscar.

The former No. 2-ranked tennis player, Álex Corretja, was born in Barcelona in 1974. He won 17 Association of Tennis Professionals singles titles during his career.

The master of silent cinema, the director Florián Rey, died in Benidorm, Alicante, on this day in 1962.
