El País leads today on the battle for power in the Partido Popular. The paper says that ten councillors in the regional parliament in Madrid are encouraging Esperanza Aguirre to stand against Mariano Rajoy as party leader at the party conference in Valencia in June. The paper headlines ‘If we get the 600 supporters, we will win for sure, Presidenta!’.
El País has a photo of the newly re-elected Italain, Silvio Berlusconi, who has described the new Zapatero Government as too sentimental. The paper has a large photo of Berlusconi, false hair and teeth easy to see.
Público has a large photo of the media magnate and says that he has returned as hard as ever and has shown xenophobia and machismo in his first comments.
El Mundo mentions Berlusconi’s criticism of the Zapatero government but does not comment on them.
ABC features President George W. Bush welcoming the Pope to the United States and notes the harsh criticism of paedophiles which has been made by the Pontiff. He said ‘They can’t be priests’.
El País reports that the Bank of Spain wants to see a reduction in spending before the tax cuts and rebates. The paper says the Governor of the Bank of Spain, Miguel Ángel Fernández Ordoñez, has called for prudence.
El Mundo says that the Bank has said is that there must be spending cuts to pay for the 400 € tax rebate. The paper notes that bad debts between companies soared by 77% in the month of February.
The tragedy of the woman decapitated in Santomera, Murcia, continues to obtain coverage. El País reveals that she had been on television asking for help in dealing with her son, and saying she feared for her life.
El Mundo tells us that her plea was broadcast nationally in 2001, and has a photo of her. The paper says that the son was suffering from schizophrenia and had already served two sentences for ill-treating and threatening his family.
Water continues to dominate some of the headlines, especially in the regions of Cataluña and Valencia. El País looks at the problem facing the country in depth today with a two page report.
Público notes that the plan to take water from the mouth of the Ebro to Barcelona will not result in any drop in the river flow.
El Mundo stirs the pot with the headlines that the Government has approved a water transfer to Barcelona, and then is insistent in denying so. The paper says it will cost 180 million to take water from the Ebro from Tarragona along a 60km pipe to the city.
ABC considers that the government in Madrid has given in to the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Montilla, and claims that the minister has admitted that water will be lost in the Ebro Delta.
El Periódico de Catalunya notes that the water for Barcelona will come thanks to the improvements in the irrigation systems.
El Mundo has a photo of protestors in Castilla y León and says that rural Spain is protesting against the new government. Farmers say they face a ‘serious crisis’ because of the inflated cereal prices.
Público notes that the Guardia Civil has been accused of violating privacy laws in the Isadora abortion clinic case. The story also has coverage in El País today.
El Mundo notes that the prosecutor is to appeal against the early release of three drag queens and a go go dancer who had been imprisoned for the sexual abuse of an 18 year old boy.
And finally,
El País reports that the prosecutor has indications that a plastic surgery clinic has defrauded some 130 women. Corporación Demoestética in Valencia is accused of using cheap breast implants which cost 600 € instead of a top name model which cost twice that. The instruction court in the case thinks it should reach the National Court.
