New photography exhibit shows the daily life of the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War

A photographic exhibition has just opened in Valencia which recreates the time of the Spanish Civil War and shows the work of the International Brigades who came to Spain to fight fascism. Together with the photos, other items from the time, documents, republican flags, magazines and newspapers, uniforms and personal objects, are all on show.
The commissioner of the exhibition, Ángel Rojo Rincón, said that the exhibition wanted to contribute to the memory of the Civil War and to highlight the role of the International Brigades. These were the units, each one made up of foreigners from more than 50 countries who fought shoulder to shoulder with the Republicans against Franco. They numbered about 35,000 men in total, from all classes and walks of life.
The 63 black and white photos, which have never been on show to the public before, and where taken between the end of 1936 and the middle of 1938, can be seen in the old University building in Valencia until May 18. They are part of the 333 in the Karol Swierczwski archive, taken by General Walter who was a commandant in the 35 division at the time.
