El País leads this morning with the revelation that negligence led to the data of 4,000 women who have had an abortion seeing their details published to the Internet.
A Basque clinic has been fined after 11,300 details of patients were placed on line by error when a worker placed the file in the file-sharing program Emule. It happened at the Lasaitasuna Clinic in Bilbao which has been fined 150,000 €.
On the international stage:
El País reports that the CIA has accused North Korea of helping Syria with its nuclear ambitions. The paper says the revelation has not been welcomed in Syria or Israel.
El País reports that restrictions on the sale of rice in the United States have resulted in record prices – with the 25$ per 100 Lbs barrier being crossed for the first time yesterday.
Back in Spain,
ABC notes that personal credit has fallen in Spain by 30% - the first fall seen for 15 years.
El Mundo notes that the pirates who have taken over the Spanish tuna fishing boat, ‘Playa de Bakio’ have now taken the vessel back onto the high seas, to avoid any assault by rival pirates.
El País notes that ‘El Nene’, who they describe as the most exhibitionist drug trafficker has been arrested on an Interpol warrant in Ceuta. The 32 year old was caught driving a car in the centre of Ceuta, his native town.
El Mundo says that he is considered to be the largest hashish trafficker in the world.
Público leads with what it calls ‘Crimes without punishment’ and looks at the environment ten years after the toxic spill disaster at Aznalcóllar in Huelva. The paper says the company responsible has still not paid any of the fine issued against it, and lists other environmental crimes which are also currently unpunished.
El País reports that a motion of censure against the ANV party in the Basque Country failed last night with the abstention of the PP, who thought it did not go far enough, and the EB-IU who were against. The paper says the President of the PNV, Iñigo Urkullu, made the most of a trip to Madrid yesterday to warn the Prime Minister that if he does not respond to the ‘open hand’ of Ibarretxe by June, the PNV will use all at its disposal at the regional elections.
El Mundo leads with the story and says the result is that IU have allowed the pro-ETA Mayor of Mondragón to stay in her post.
ABC leads with the story and again blames IU for what has happened, noting that the single PP councillor abstained.
El Mundo says that the diplomatic world in Spain is upset with the naming of eight party politicians as ambassadors.
ABC has a front page photo of the Spanish defence minister, Carme Chacón, who had lunch with the French Justice Minister, Rachida Dati. ‘A women’s lunch’, says the paper.
Little on the PP leadership today, although El Mundo does report that the Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Riuz Gallardón, is reported to be willing to combine his current job with new responsibilities in the P.P. Gallardón said he had not been offered anything by Mariano Rajoy, but that he could be counted on.
ABC tells us that Rodrigo Rato and Ángel Acebes, two of the PP bigwigs, had lunch together in Madrid yesterday to discuss what is going on in the party. The paper says that the party congress will see a rigorous ideological debate.
And finally,
ABC says that the Ministry for Health has financed a gay guide, from a non-governmental organisation, to the tune of 350,000 € which tells users how to combine sex and drugs without danger.
