email this article The vessel and its cargo of scrap metal has been half sunken off Europa Point since being in collission with a tanker last August. The European Parliament on Thursday called on ‘the competent authorities’, seen as an indirect way to refer to Gibraltar, to inform them about the state of the cargo which remains on the practically sunken cargo ship, ‘New Flame’ off Europa Point. The boat has been there since she was in collision with a tanker last August. The E.U. has also asked for Gibraltar to supply it with a plan and calendar for the removal of the wreck and its cargo.
Peter Caruana, the Gibraltar First Minister, when asked about the E.U. resolution on Thursday said that he was unaware of it, but replied that definite times could not be given, but that the work would be completed in the ‘opportune time’.
Gibraltar has brought in the Titan Salvage company to carry out the work, described by Caruana as ‘one of the most important in marine salvage in the world panorama’.
