email this article Disappointment for Fernando Alonso in front of his home crowd as the R28 started spouting white smoke on the 34th lap.Despite the second place on the grid for Fernando Alonso, it was not going to be his day at the Spanish Grand Prix in Montmeló.
His R28 engine, on its second outing found the going too touch and gave up in the 34th lap when the Spaniard was running fifth in the race, which was dominated from start to finish by the two Ferraris, with Kimi Raikkonen winning and Felipe Massa taking second.
Finnish driver Kovalainen suffered a spectacular accident at high speed in the McLaren, crashing into a wall of tyres but despite the car being wrecked he escaped practically unhurt.
Speaking after the race Alonso said that despite the disappointment in front of his home crowd the Renault R28 was now close to being a fully competitive car. ‘Now we can only think in Istanbul’, he said. ‘Hopefully we can have some fun’.
