The President of the Galician Government, Emilio Pérez Touriño, presided over the reception of the body of the second Prime Minister in the period of democracy, with over a thousand people attending the funeral.
Many local people spoke of Calvo-Sotelo’s affection for the town of Ribadeo. After laying in rest in the Ayuntamiento to allow the locals to pay their respect, the funeral cortege took a route past the areas of the town which meant the most to the ex Prime Minister, such as down the road which now bears his name, and past the house where he spent many summers.
The body was then taken by pall-bearers into the Parish Church of Santa María do Campo, and after the mass, taken to the parish cemetery a kilometre away. He rests at peace in the same place as his parents.
