email this article The leader of the party in the Basque Region, María San Gil, is reported to have 'fundamental differences' with the party. The problems for the opposition Partido Popular continue, with the revelation that the popular head of the party in the Basque Country, María San Gil, will no longer sit on the committee which draws up party policy. In a short statement released by the party in the region, the decision taken was described as ‘not a resignation’. María San Gil is reported to have ‘fundamental differences’ with the party, although what these are is not clear.
It comes after the Partido Popular leader, Mariano Rajoy, has continued to ignore demands from many in the party to name his new opposition team, and in particular who is to replace Ángel Acebes as Secretary General.
Rajoy is leaving his announcement until the party conference in Valencia next month, but has hinted that the Valencia deputy, González Pons, will be at his side. Commentators think he is set to be party spokesman or Secretary General.
Some in the party are putting forward the recovery of the Conservative Party in Britain as an example to follow.
