email this article El Mundo is the only paper to bring out a second edition to reflect the ETA bombing of a Civil Guard barracks at 3am this morning.El Mundo headlines with the news ‘ETA blows up a Civil Guard barracks in Álava, killing one and injuring four. The paper says a van bomb destroyed part of the building.
El País has not got a second edition out and leads with the PP problems. The paper headlines that the hardliners in the party are backing the posture of the party leader in the Basque region, María San Gil, to defeat Rajoy. The paper quotes Jaime Mayor Oreja, who has said the party has to choose between rendition and resistance. He said he would battle on.
El Mundo continues its coverage on the problems in the Partido Popular, and says that Jaime Mayor Oreja, PP Euro MP has commented that the people are the problem, while Mariano Rajoy has now requested silence on the matter and ordered PP deputies not to answer questions, talk or get involved in the debate.
ABC headlines that Rajoy has ordered not to talk about the San Gil case, and has warned that they will be no change in the principles of the party.
Público has a front page graphic of a mobile phone with a photo of PP leader Mariano Rajoy. The caption reads – switched off or no coverage. The paper says he is only talking to a reduced group of loyal supporters, and he has lost San Gil despite her choice of policy document being chosen in the Basque region.
El Periodico reports that the Rajoy team has warned about a complot from the hardliners.
El Mundo has a front page photo from the earthquake area in China. The paper reports that hope is fading while the mobile phones of victims can be heard ringing in the rubble.
El País also with a front page photo of broken concrete slabs and a body rescued from the rubble in China. The paper says the race is on against the clock to reach thousands of people buried by the quake. ‘China agonizes under the rubble’ is the headline.
ABC has a large front page photo of a trapped man who has a drip in his arm. ‘Agony under the ruins’ is the headline. The paper says China is working against the clock to save hundreds of injured in the rubble, and that the death toll is now more than 12,000.
Staying on the international stage, El País has an article written by Daniel Barenboim on the 60th anniversary of Israel. He tells the paper that there will never be a military solution.
ABC has an interview with the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert, who says he wants a smaller, more democratic state of Israel, and for it to be a refuge for all jews.
El Mundo notes that the Minister for Tax and the Economy, Pedro Solbes, has approved the planned 11.3% increase in electricity prices. The paper notes he does so despite the possible effects on inflation.
El País notes the 11% increase proposed by the National Energy Commission, and says it depends on the Ministry for Industry to approve the amount which would be applied from July 1.
Público notes the increase, if approved, will be the largest electricity rise in 20 years.
La Vanguardia leads with the headline that the Government will accept the increase.
La Vanguardia also has a photo of the tanker taking water into Barcelona. ‘Water by boat at the price of gold’ is the caption.
Público notes that the National Court has found the three United States soldiers charged with killing of the Tele 5 cameraman, José Couso with their friendly fire, not guilty by deciding to archive the case.
El País has more on the corrupt local police from Coslada near Madrid. The paper says that the local police chief, Ginés Jiménez, carried out his extortion in the town, pistol in hand. The paper says the local police now held in prison robbed thieves and abused women.
And finally,
ABC reports that the Catalan government, La Generalitat, is establishing schools to teach Catalan in France, spending 3.5 million € on the project.
