Constitutional Court judge dies from a heart attack

The Constitutional Court judge, Roberto García-Calvo, has died. He was 65 and currently preparing documents against the Constitutional Court sentence which backed the Government’s new Domestic Violence law which allows for greater punishment for male offenders. However he had been taken off the case in March following the P.P. challenge to the law.
The conservative judge, from La Bañeza in León, was named a magistrate of the Constitutional Court in 2001, and was most famous for his challenge to the Catalan Statutes, being charged by the Catalan Government with a ‘lack of impartiality’.
The death of the judge, reportedly from a massive heart attack at his villa on the outskirts of Madrid, could change the political balance of the court. He had been complaining to friends for some time that he did not feel well.
