Differences between him and the sport's federation have been increasing of late.

Spain’s Basketball Federation has announced that it has sacked the national trainer, Pepu Hernández.

It follows a meeting held between the two sides this morning, and the decision will have a great effect on the team ahead of the Olympic Games just two months away.

Pepu had demanded that his situation be clarified, as he said press speculation was having an effect on the players.

The personality clash between the President of the Federation, José Luis Sáez, and Pepu remains clear, unlike the name of his replacement although the front-runner has been named as Aíto García Reneses who has left Joventut after five seasons. Another name being mentioned is Sergio Scariolo, the Italian technician with Unicaja Málaga.

The Federation were first angry after Pepu announced that he intended to retire after the Olympics anyway, which led the Federation to believe that he had reached an agreement with a club side, something which he has denied.
