Two Spanish gay men released from custody in Gambia

The two Catalan gay men who were arrested in Gambia after allegedly coming on to two taxi drivers, appeared before the judge in the country yesterday and were then released, according to Spanish Foreign Ministry sources.
The two men could have been imprisoned for 14 years if the case had proceeded, after the President of Gambia, Yahya Jammeh, declared last month that he would ‘cut the heads’ of homosexuals and gave those living in Gambia 24 hours to leave the country.
The alleged incident involving the two Spaniards took place in the tourist resort of Kotu, close to the capital, Banjul.
The release of the two men was confirmed in a phone call made to the Spanish foreign minister, Miguel Ángel Moratinos.
