The International Exhibition opens on the banks of the Ebro river this Saturday.

The Army is sending 750 soldiers to Zaragoza to strengthen the security procedures ahead of the opening of the EXPO 2008.
The group will be on duty from midnight tonight and will protect the international exhibition site on the banks of the Ebro river both by land and air in an operation codenamed ‘Centinela Aragonés’.

Part of the security brief is to protect the ‘critical infrastructures’ in the area, such as the AVE high speed train line, and airspace above the exhibition.

A statement from the Ministry for Defence said the 750 military, from all three armed forces, were a preventative force designed to put off any possible attack.

The expo opens on Saturday and continues until September 14.
