It follows a visit to the troops made by the King last December 31.

The Prince of Asturias has started a surprise visit to the Spanish troops in Afghanistan. The heir to the Spanish throne will be in Qala-e-Now for just an hour, to spend time with the 220 soldiers who are engaged in reconstruction duties in the area, before moving on to the Spanish base at Herat.

In total there are 726 Spanish soldiers in Afghanistan, in the two bases which are both in the west of the country.

Don Felipe will get to see the Camp Arena, which was visited by his father the King on New Year’s Eve last year.

It’s the first such trip for the Prince since he visited Spanish soldiers in Kosovo in 2002.
