New legislation is expected to be in place by the summer of 2009.

Terminal sedations are already being carried out in public hospitals in Andalucía, according to a statement made by the Regional Councillor for Health, María Jesús Montero.

She said the future law which is planned to come into force next summer would control the dignity of people in the process of death and that the first draft of the legislation would be presented to the governing council of the Junta in October this year, with its debate and approval expected in the summer of 2009.

She said that twenty experts were already debating the ethics of such a dignified death law which would allow for patients to end their suffering, and the right of the patient to receive treatment or not would be respected.
