It was a day of mixed fortunes for Spanish players at the All England Club yesterday.

Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero had to retire in Wimbledon yesterday when playing the German Michael Zverev and losing 6-4, 6-2 and 2-1. The Spaniard said he felt an injury to his right leg and it was not possible for him to continue.

Another Spaniard who went out yesterday was Albert Montañés, who lost 7-6, 6-0 and 6-2 against the 2002 Wimbledon champion, Lleyon Hewitt.

However there was better news for both the Madrid player Feliciano López and Valencian Anabel Medina who are both through to the next round.

Rafa Nadal opens play on Court 1 today, meeting Ernests Gulbis for the very first time at 2pm.
