email this articleLaporta lost the vote of no confidence against him, but does not have to resign as the percentage did not reach the 66.6% needed. The Chairman of Barcelona Football Club, Joan Laporta, broke down and was close to tears at an event in his support on Friday against the motion of censure which is planned against him on Sunday.
He apologised to his colleagues at the event organised in the Hotel Majestic in the city, which saw a group of intellectuals, politicians and others defend his running of the club.
Laporta attacked the man behind the motion of no confidence, Oriol Giralt, and the ex vice president, Sandro Rosell, who had established a group to ‘erode his figure’.
In the event the vote on Sunday saw a lack of needed support for the motion. Oriol Giralt got 60.6% support for his challenge, but that was 6% lower than that needed for the current management team to be dissolved. Laporta does not need to call any new election to the board.
