email this article In an epic final marked by rain delays and ending in the dusk of Wimbledon, Nadal overcame Federer in five sets.Rafa Nadal has said that he is still not number one and that Federer is still better. He made the comment after beating the Swiss player in a dramatic Wimbledon Final being widely described as one of the best ever.
The Spaniard said he was very happy to have won his favourite tournament after a final which lasted four hours and 48 minutes. There were also stoppages for rain.
Nadal took the first two sets, Federer the next two after tie-breaks and then Nadal took the fifth finally 9-7 in the failing Wimbledon light. 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7 and 9-7.
It’s the fifth Grand Slam win for Nadal.
The match was watched by the Prince and Princess of Asturias, and Nadal rushed across to greet them in the Royal Box after he had been congratulated by his family in the crowd, seated with his uncle Toni, his trainer and Carlos Costa, his manager.
It’s the first victory for a Spaniard in Wimbledon since the win in 1966 by Manolo Santana.
