The victim is aged about 75 and is thought to be German. A full investigation has been opened and an autopsy is to be carried out.

The body of a man, thought to be German and aged about 75, appeared floating on the Ortigas beach in Guardamar del Segura yesterday. The body had a life-jacket and harness, usually used in water sports, and an investigation has been started by the Guardia Civil to try and establish where the victim came from.

It was spotted at 4pm by the red cross patrol on the beach who tried to revive the man without success. An autopsy is to be carried out but a Red Cross spokesman thought that death was not likely to have been caused by drowning as the man was wearing a life jacket.
