Mayor of Alicante town arrested for corruption

Juan Cardona is the independent Mayor of Benitatxell

The Mayor of Benitatxell in Alicante, the independent Juan Cardona, has been arrested on charges of perversion of the course of justice and bribery. Also arrested on the same charges is his Austrian deputy, Hannelore Rheindorf, in a case which is linked to the re-classification of land for building.

Some sources indicate that a third arrest of a German person accused of acting as an intermediary in an alleged backhander payment, has been made in the case.

Reporting restrictions have been introduced in the case, but it is understood that the arrested men are being held in the cells of the Civil Guard in Jávea and Calpe.

Benitatxell is a small tourist village, with a population of 4,800. It’s found in the Marina Alta, the northern coastline of Alicante province, and two thirds of he residents are Europeans.
