Zapatero was in Paris for a summit meeting as criticism over the economy has increased at home.

The Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, met yesterday in the Spanish Embassy in Paris with the ex Presidential candidate in Colombia, Ingrid Betancourt.

Zapatero promised to work for the liberation of all the people who were still being held hostage by the FARC guerrillas in the Colombian forests, and to support the Colombian President, Álvaro Uribe.

An exhausted Betancourt was given some gifts by Zapatero including French and Spanish football shirts and a book ‘The Book of Life’ by Santa Teresa.

Zapatero was in Paris to attend a summit and the launch of the Union for the Mediterranean project. Foreign Minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos suggested Barcelona as a possible headquarters for the project.

Zapatero’s trip to Paris comes as nine out of ten Spaniards consider the country to be in an economic crisis, according to a poll published in Sunday’s El País newspaper.

Most of those questioned consider that the Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, is not doing enough in the current situation and 53% of those questioned think things are set to get worse. The poll was carried out on July 9 and 10 and saw 700 people being questioned.
